MP4 to MP3 Converter

Pull the sound out of a video and save it as an MP3 or WAV. Works with MP4, MOV, M4V and WebM files, one at a time or in a batch.

Add video files

Drop videos here

or paste them with Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac)

Your videos stay on your device. The sound is read and converted inside your browser and the files are not uploaded. Only the MP3 encoder code (about 150 KB) downloads from a public CDN the first time you convert to MP3, and the ZIP library (about 95 KB) if you use Download all. This tool works on files you already have: it cannot download from YouTube or any other website, so only convert videos you made or have permission to use.

Output settings

Format

MP3 is small and plays everywhere. WAV is uncompressed, about 7 to 8 times the size of a 192 kbps MP3.

MP3 bitrate

In kbps. 128 suits speech, 192 suits most music, 320 is the highest quality MP3 allows.

Channels

Mono blends left and right into one channel. MP3 size follows the bitrate, so lower the bitrate to shrink it. A video with mono sound stays mono.

Same as the video keeps 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz. Any other rate is changed to one of those.

Type times as minutes:seconds, such as 1:30 or 12:05.5, or just seconds. Leave both blank to keep the whole soundtrack.

Converted audio

Nothing converted yet. Add a video above and its audio will appear here with a player and a download button.

How to convert MP4 to MP3

    1. Pick the Format (MP3 or WAV) and the MP3 bitrate. The defaults, MP3 at 192 kbps, suit most videos.
    2. To keep part of the sound, type Start at and End at times such as 1:30. Tick Normalize to -1 dBFS peak for a quiet video.
    3. Drag videos onto the drop zone, click Choose video files, paste with Ctrl+V, or click Try a sample clip.
    4. Play the preview, then click Download or Download all (ZIP). After changing a setting, click Convert again with the new settings.

    How the audio is extracted

The picture is never decoded. Your browser reads the soundtrack with its built-in decoder (decodeAudioData), the tool mixes it to stereo or mono and applies your trim and volume settings, and lamejs, a JavaScript port of the LAME encoder, writes a constant-bitrate MP3 in a background thread.

    Worked example

Click Try a sample clip: an 85.1 KB, 5 second MP4 with a 440 Hz tone on the left and 660 Hz on the right. The row shows MP4 85.1 KB → MP3 118.7 KB · 5.0 s · stereo 48 kHz · 192 kbps and sample-clip.mp3 downloads. That matches 192 kbps: 24,000 bytes a second is about 117 KB for 5 seconds, plus a header. Choose 128 and convert again for 79.1 KB, or enter 1 and 3.5 as Start at and End at for a 2.5 second, 60.2 KB file.

Which bitrate and format to choose

MP3 bitrate is constant, so size is predictable: about 0.9 MB a minute at 128 kbps, 1.4 MB at 192, 1.8 MB at 256 and 2.3 MB at 320. Use 128 for speech, 192 for music and most videos, and 256 or 320 for files you will keep. Mono does not shrink an MP3 at the same bitrate. WAV is uncompressed, about 10 MB a minute at 44.1 kHz stereo, and suits editing. M4A (Apple's AAC format) keeps the original sound but plays in fewer places; this tool writes MP3 and WAV.

    Doing it without an app

On a Mac, QuickTime Player's Export As, Audio Only saves an M4A, not an MP3 (Apple Support); the Music app can turn that into an MP3. In Windows 11, Clipchamp's audio-only download is also M4A. On an iPhone or iPad, open this page in Safari and pick a clip from your Photo Library. To record new sound, use the audio recorder or voice memo recorder.

    MP4 to MP3 FAQ

Are my videos uploaded when I convert them?

No. The sound is read and encoded inside your browser. Only the MP3 encoder (about 150 KB) and the ZIP library come from a public CDN.

Can I paste a YouTube link to get an MP3?

No. The tool only works on video files already on your device and cannot download from YouTube or any other site.

Does converting MP4 to MP3 lose quality?

A little. MP3 compresses a second time the sound a video already stores compressed, usually as AAC. At 192 kbps or higher the loss is hard to hear, and WAV avoids it.

Does it work with MOV videos from an iPhone?

Yes. iPhone MOV files use AAC sound, which browsers decode, and clips over 96 MB are read as sound frames only.

Why did my file fail, and how big can it be?

Usually the video has no sound track, its audio is Dolby Digital or DTS, or the file is damaged; the message names the cause. The limits are 2 GB and 60 minutes (20 on phones and devices with 4 GB of memory or less).
