How Self-Employment Tax Works

Self-employed people pay both halves of Social Security (12.4%) and Medicare (2.9%) — 15.3% total on the first $176,100 (2026). Regular employees split this with their employer. You calculate SE tax on Schedule SE.

The 92.35% Adjustment

SE tax applies to 92.35% of net earnings (not 100%). This adjusts for the employer's half of FICA that would normally be deductible. So effective rate on net earnings is ~14.13%, not 15.3%.

Half-Tax Deduction

You can deduct 50% of your SE tax from your income (not self-employment income specifically) on Form 1040. This lowers income tax, though it doesn't reduce the SE tax itself.
